From January to December 2004, consumer prices, costs of agricultural and industrial production, rates for freight transportation increased faster than in the corresponding period of 2003. Some areas grew more slowly due to judicial complications – especially the areas of capital construction and in the field of communicational services.
During that period real incomes grew faster than in the corresponding period of the previous year, and real wages – somewhat slower.
The debts in the payment of wages for December were considerably reduced. The pensions and children's benefits in 2004 were paid off fully and on time.
Profit margins at large and medium-sized enterprises from January to November 2004 exceeded those from the corresponding period of 2003.
The situation on the labor market is stable.
Industry
The total index of industrial production for the enterprises in 2004 is 110,3%, for large and medium-sized enterprises 110,1%. Growth was observed in 8 of the 10 main industrial sectors of the regional economy. The highest rate of growth was observed in instrument production and the engineering-metal working industry – over1,6 times higher than the previous year. The following industries remained stable: the chemical and petrochemical industry, the food industry, the timber, wood working and paper industry, the fuel industry, the electric power industry and the building materials industry.
Agricultural Production (accounting for the 14 agricultural enterprises, situated on the territory of Saint-Petersburg)
The Leningrad region’s gross agricultural output in 2004 amounted to 25,4 billion rubles (or 98,2% of the 2003 level), including agricultural production - 10 billion rubles (94,4%) and stock-breeding – 15,4 billion rubles (101,2%). Agricultural enterprises produced 63,4% (16,1 billion rubles or 102,7% of the 2003 level) from the total volume of agricultural production.
Grains
The Leningrad Region’s farms of every category produced 552,000 tons of grain (in the height after revision), that is 1,5 times more than in 2003; 471,000 tons of potato (73%), 255,400 tons of vegetables from the open and protected soil. The share of the private farms and individuals is 74% in the total potato production and 41% in the vegetable production. Agricultural enterprises produced 548,000 tons of grain cultures, that is 1,5 times more than in the last year, with the yield of crops 25 centners per one hectare (4,3 centners more than in 2003); 124,900 tons of potato (120,6%) with a yield of 147 centners per one hectare (11 centners lower that in 2003); picked up 124,900 tons of vegetables from the open soils (106,6%) with the yield of corps 382 centners per one hectare (19 centners more). 243,000 tons of vegetables were produced on protected soils, 8% lower than the 2003 level.
Cattle-Breeding In 2004 158,500 tons of cattle and poultry beef were produced in the Leningrad Region - 105% of 2003 level (by agricultural enterprises – 144,500 tons or 107%), milk – 565,200 tons or 94% (by agricultural enterprises – 487,300 tons or 96%), 2 192 700 000 eggs or 102% (by agricultural enterprises – 2 155 000 000 eggs or 102%)
Transport The total volume of services of large and middle-sized transport organizations in 2004 is 30 632 000 000 rubles. The average quantity of workers of large and middle-sized transport enterprises is 25 500 employees (101,1%). The average salary in the sector in November 2004 was 9 326 rubles (17,7% greater than in 2003 and 32,2% higher than the region’s average salary). The highest salaries are earned by those working in the sea transport and in the pipeline transportation network. The total volume of motorized cargo transportation (includes individuals), by pipelines (mainly by Limited Liability firm “Baltpetroliumpipeline”) and domestic river transport during 2004 increased by 20% in relation to the 2003 level and exceeded 102,6 million tons. The total volume of freight turnover for 2004 was 56,1 billion tons/ km (133,9%), including pipeline transportation – 90,8 million tons (121,2%)…
Railroad transport According to the data provided by Oktyabrskay railroad, 101,1 million tons of a various freight was transported in 2004. Among that sum – 17,3 million tons of petroleum and oil products (41,2%), 15,18 million tons of buildings materials (36,2%), and 3 million tons of timber freights (7,2%).
Motor transport Motor vehicles carried 5,1 million tons of freight (100,6% by the 2003 level). The large and middle-sized organizations carried 4 million tons of the total volume.
Sea transport The total volume of freight transferred by Leningrad Region’s stevedore companies was 51,97 million tons – 2,4 times more than the 2003 level. Exports accounted for 99,6%, import – 0,2%. The Primorsk sea port transferred 44,6 million tons of crude oil and petroleum products (2,5 times more 2003 level). The Vyborg sea port transferred 1,374,000 tones, or 126% of the 2003 level. The principal cargoes here are coal, scrap metal and mineral fertilizer. Joint-Stock company “Ust’-Luga timber terminal “Factor” started shipping in April, 2004, and transferred 202,2 thousand tons of timber in that year. The petroleum terminal RPK “Lukoil-II” exported 1555,5 thousand tons of oil and petroleum products.
Domestic river transport The volume of cargo transportation for the navigation period of 2004 is 6,7 million tons (118,7% of the 2003 level). Of river-borne freight – 753,2 million tons/ km. (115%). 99,8% was transported by the Joint-Stock company “Leningrad River Port”.
Communication The total volume of communication’s services, rendered by the region’s organizations in 2004, was valued at 2240 million rubles or 111% of the total for 2003. During the 11 months of 2004, the communication enterprises realized a profit of 9 million rubles, or 3,7 times the corresponding period of the previous year. There were no unprofitable organizations in this sector on December 1, 2004.
Investment 2004 witnessed continuing increases in the volume of investment in the region’s economy. The investment’s volume in the basic capital from every source of financing was about 57 – 59 billion rubles. This is about 6-10% more than the 2003 level. Large and middle-sized organizations used more than 75% of the total volume of this investment. The primary investment (near to 40 billion rubles or 91%) was absorbed by the production industries.
Finances In the period from January to November 2004, the profits of large and middle-sized enterprises in the main sectors of the economy was 27 075 million rubles. This is 1,9 times more than the corresponding period of 2003.
In 2004, rendered paid services to the region’s population came to 10 685 million rubles. Including: communal services – 31,2%, communication services – 17%, transport services – 12,3%, housing – 11,5% and service – 8,9%.
Labor Market In 2004 the official regional unemployment rate was 1,2%. It is the lowest, after Saint Petersburg (0,8%), in the North-West federal district. |
